Physics is the core science and has an enormous wealth of applications ranging from medical imaging through to understanding the origins of the universe. It is an exciting subject to study, and our aim at Exeter is for you to experience that excitement in a stimulating and thought-provoking way. Much emphasis is put on giving students individual attention through tutorials, problem classes, laboratory work and projects.



BSc./MPhys. Physics (including astrophysics, biomedical physics and physics with study abroad)

  • Teaching within the School of Physics was officially assessed as 'excellent' by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, with our tutorial system receiving particular praise.
  • Ranked 8th in the UK for world leading and internationally excellent research* and many of our staff are international leaders in their field. Current research is incorporated into learning and teaching and we are able to offer undergraduate research projects that are conducted at the frontiers of Physics.

BSc. Medical Imaging (diagnostic radiography)

  • In the most recent (February 2007) QAA Major Review of Healthcare report the BSc Medical Imaging Programme has been 'commended' for learning and teaching, student progression, learning resources and their effective utilisation. This is the highest grade that can be awarded.
  • Excellent facilities including a diagnostic x-ray room with digital imaging facilities.
  • Our expertise in Biomedical Physics means that it is one of the most highly regarded diagnostic radiography qualifications in the country.

PhD. Physics

  • The School of Physics also has a number of funded PhD places with considerable flexibility concerning the precise area of research.
